Cemeteries of Yorktown/Mt. Pleasant Township

There are a number of small cemeteries located throughout the area, many associated with churches or burials on family land. Because an ancestor is not found in online resources, such as “FindaGrave.com”, does not mean that your family isn’t buried in this area. There are resources at the Delaware County Historical Society and Yorktown-Mt. Pleasant Historical Alliance of cemeteries and churches in the area. As the only significant burial ground in Muncie for more than a century, Beech Grove Cemetery is a rich source of information for local historians and genealogists. Many people from the Yorktown area were buried there. Liberty Township, Delaware County, IN—Selma

  • Bortsfield Cemetery, 600 E. (Pittenger Rd.), Selma, IN. Go south on 600E from SR 32. Cemetery is on the south side of Selma on the west side of the road. Grassy lane leads to cemetery. Oldest marker 1844. About 60 markers. Poor condition (2000). Latitude: 40.1858, Longitude: 85.2744

  • Smithfield Cemetery, 625 E, Selma, IN. IN-32 to 600 E. Go south to 138 S and then east to 625 E. Go south into Smithfield. Cemetery is on the east side of the road before the T- intersection at 170 S. Take driveway back to a log cabin-style house and continue to cemetery gate on the north side of the drive. Cemetery may now be lost. The state couldn’t find it in 2000. Latitude: 40.1695, Longitude: 85.2672
  • Sparr Cemetery, 600 E., DeSoto, IN Restricted Access. “No Trespassing”.
  • Truitt-Wilson, Off of 500E in Selma, IN. From 125 S, go east to 500 E. Go south on 500 E to the first curve. Take first driveway on the east side of the road, past the house. From the barnyard follow lane north along the creek to the cemetery. About 12 markers in overgrown woods. Very poor condition (2000). Latitude: 40.1717 Longitude: 85.2892

  • Macedonia Cemetery, 700 S, Cowan, IN. IN-e to 700 S. Go east to the cemetery on the north side of the road at the corner behind a wall. about 1/4 acre. more than 20 markers. Earliest marker 1852. Latitude: 40.0914, Longitude: 85.3481

  • Dale Cemetery, west end of Sorghum Rd., Daleville, IN. Markers unreadable except for one. Poorly maintained. On private property at west on Sorgum to dead end–between the house and garage (as of 2000). Latitude: 40.1208, Longitude: 85.5601

  • Sharp Cemetery, (aka “Witch’s Circle”) IN-67 to 438 W curve toward southwest to 750 S. Go west to the next turn. Cemetery is west of and set back from the corner down grassy lane. Only four markers intact. Others vandalized beyond repair and scattered on the ground. Earliest marker 1836.   • Leaird Cemetery, 275 E, Granville, IN. IN-3 to 900 N. Go east to T intersection at 275 E. Go south and east on winding road to the cemetery on the south side of the road. Oldest stone 1836. 73 readable stones. Latitude: 40.3203, Longitude: 85.3342
  • Mt. Zion Church Cemetery, Eaton-Wheeling Pike at N CR 100 W, Muncie, IN 47303. West of Eaton. In back of the restored Mt. Zion pioneer church. Oldest marker 1830. Latitude: 40.3489 Longitude: 85.4072. Old ford across the Mississinewa River was beside the church making 100 W a through county road over to 1000 N.
  • Roderick Cemetery, 1200 N, Eaton, IN. Restricted Access. IN-3 to 1054 N (Eaton-Wheeling Pike). Go west to 170 W, then north to 1200 N. Just north of the Mississinewa River.
