The Indiana State Supreme Court ruled in 1820 that slavery was expressly prohibited in Indiana by its constitution in 1816. This ruling applied to Polly who was purchased in another state and moved to Indiana. The “grandfather clause” to slavery in Indiana was over-ruled.
